The Avengers – The Review

The Avengers – The Review - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPoHPNeU9fc

Regular readers of Fuzzylogic999 would already know about my thoughts on Super Hero Movie as a genre of movie making... I’ve dealt with it way back in 2010 with my review of Iron Man 2... In case you haven’t here’s the link - http://fuzzylogic999.blogspot.in/search/label/Iron%20Man%20-%20The%20Review... I would urge all my new readers to read this one as it will give you a very good idea that I absolutely love Iron Man and ever since 2010 I had been eagerly waiting to see The Avengers and finally that wait is now overrr...

And boy-o-boy it was sure worth it... Without a doubt...!!! I left the movie hall with a plethora of thoughts – perplexed, shocked beyond belief, excited, happy, dreamy eyed and but above all one thought that dominated every other was - I am definitely seeing this movie again and maybe again...

Insane right...??? The usually ass ripping, generation degrading, highly critical and often rude as a Crocodile who can’t appreciate others, Fuzzylogic999 is suddenly going gaga... Hmmm... How come???

Well the reason is simple... The Avengers is that good... Simple... Period... They’ve made a super hero movie that is funny, witty beyond even Two And A Half Men... Just when the action is totally crazy something outrageously funny will happen and you will start laughing when you least expect it... Something that is unthinkable of for this genre...

Take Christopher Nolan's Batman... Highly successful but very dark and edgy without a hint of humor... Batman is extremely popular and the Box Office is a witness to that... In fact 2012 will see Batman rise again with the final edition of the Dark Knight Series... I like Batman but at times the entertainment is a little slack...

They’ve made a super hero movie that is outrageously different from others with its simple yet powerful and easily understandable concept... Most such movies have a simple story... A good and calm life... Enter the villain with a crazy plan... Cometh the hero...!!! Have a big budget fight... Good wins over evil... The Avengers is different in its treatment of how this happens in over 2 hours... I won’t let out the secret... Go watch out...

Just to understand the enormity of the concept of The Avengers you have to you have to look at some mind blowing numbers – it’s made on a budget of 220 Million – by any stretch of stretching numbers it easily qualifies as being one of the most expensive movies ever made.... I’ve looked up some numbers of other equally big movies and its right up there – Avatar was made @ 237 Million; Titanic @ 200 Million; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest @ 225 Million; Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen @ 200 Million... So the risk with the Avengers is huge...!!!

Superman's famous - with great power comes great responsibility applies very much to The Avengers... With such humongous expectations it sometimes becomes even more tougher to get things right... Especially with so many big names, characters its complex to manage everything and not over or under do it... That I think is where this movie succeeds big time and I really appreciate the effort...

But if you look closely at the Avengers you will realize that this is not just one movie but actually the 6th movie in a series of movies made by Marvel since 2006-07 which boast of some outstanding numbers i.e.

Iron Man 2008 - made @ 140 Million and went on to make 585 Million... Highly successful and hugely loved... The movie made Robert Downey Jr into a huge star and set in motion The Avengers plan... Jov Favreau, the director does a superb job in giving the most real and believable Super Hero of all time...

The Incredible Hulk - made @ 150 Million and went on to make 263 Million... The giant Green Guy is loved by many for being super powerful and unpredictable when in rage... Edward Norton played the Hulk very well, weird that we couldn't see him reprise this role...
Iron Man 2 2010 - made @ 200 Million and went on to make 623 Million... Tony Strak proves his mettle again... Solves his legacy issues, improves the Iron Man suit by many a mile and shows he can be a Super Hero with a face to recognize by one and all... This movie had many comic puns and that really set the stage for The Avengers initiative... Robert Downey Jr is now Legend wait for Dary... Legendary...!!!
Thor 2011 - made @ 150 Million and went on to make 450 Million... This outer space tale of two brothers revolving around various Gods is a very different Super Hero flick... It did very well at the Box Office... Chris Hemsworth became an overnight super star...

Captain America: The First Avenger2011 – made @ 140 Million and went on to make 368 Million... Chris Evans plays the all American Super Hero with great poise... The movie revolves around World War II and how Captain Rogers saves the day... This movie shows the now widely known "Tesseract" concept for world domination as an indestructible energy source...

So you get the point??? Do you??? 5 out of 5 at the Box Office with different concepts, different actors, different brands, different directors and then this one which has all of them coming together... Something must be right with all of them that all of them did so well... The stakes for Avengers are so high and the way they handled this with élan is what makes it so truly special...

In a recent interview Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t shy to accept that when he was told there Iron Man was just a start and that some time in 2012 the Avengers would be made as a culmination, he thought that Marvel was crazy and this was not possible... But come 2012 it’s been made possible... Kudos... And executed so so well...

I have no qualms in stating that just for the sheer risk taking, brilliance of ideas, concept, special effects, storyline, dialogues, cinematography, directing, comedy, individual performances, marketing and above all a feel good factor, The Avengers deserves to be the highest grosses ever beating Avatar... Read my “Cheeta Bhi Peeta Hai” review of the Avatar at - http://fuzzylogic999.blogspot.in/search/label/Avatar%20%E2%80%93 %20The%20Review...

This is officially the highest grosser of all time... 2.7 Billion and still counting... Also has a sequel coming up in a year of two...??? Oh My God... Yikes... How??? Its time for a change and the Avengers should do something about it... While the effects of the movie were good and the concept decent... The script and story line was so boring and dull that a class 3 kid could say what would happen next... Get your ass off the chair and go watch the Avengers... Make sure it makes more than the Avatar...

I won’t write much about the movie since I feel that so much has already been written about the stars and the most people already know about each character... For me the high’s of the movie lie in the execution of The Avengers plan, hence that lengthy discussion in the beginning...

Here's a quick snap shot...

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/ Iron Man.. The super egoistic, brilliant yet extremely funny self made super hero whose a treat to watch... Super talented and perhaps the biggest star in the last 7 years... Downey has done it all - critical and commercial success and acclaim... Sherlock Holmes (1 and 2), Tropic Thunder, Iron Man (1 and 2), Due Date, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Chaplin, Ally McBeal... Outrageously good with his dialogues he is the glue that eventually binds The Avengers together... Within the Super Hero genre he must be credited with being able to show a comic timing... I am a big fan of Downey and wish to see more of his works... If you haven't see much of him till date, do so... Highly talented...
Mark Ruffalo as Dr. Bruce Banner/ Hulk... He is truly incredible... I've not seen any of his earlier works but will do soon... His portrayal was simply brilliant... He does a good job at trying to contain his inner rage and not turn into the "Other Guy"... But when time does call he does so and with utmost ease... Full marks to him as is the 3rd guy to play the Hulk and it was tough but he did set a new bench mark... I loved the Hulk and Dr. Banners inner conflict... He smiles yet he is angry... I can't get better than this...

Tony Stark / Iron Man & Dr. Bruce Banner/ Hulk... They share excellent chemistry and are a delight to watch... Apparently the only guys who can "Speak English"... Total awesome...!!!

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America... A World War II American Super Hero whose frozen to be available again to save the world... Evans is extremely good looking and played his part well... He regularly gets into arguments with Stark's Iron Man and does things the old fashioned way... Hard working and very endearing Captain is good to watch...

Steve Rogers / Captain America & Tony Stark / Iron Man... Lots of turbulence and under currents... Good to watch... Many felt that their ego clash is vital to show the former and current state of America, the tough times and what's happening today...

Chris Hemsworth as Thor... He's a Norse God of Thunder and his estranged brother Loki is the main villain... Hemsworth is good too... Don't know much about him, he's still very young and should have a good career ahead of him... He tries his best to prevent mayhem on Earth but his persuasive skills are no match for Loki... His scene with the Hulk in full rage is a treat to watch as he matches punch for punch with the Hulk and shows a heart to fight...

Jeremy Renner as Agent Clint Barton / Hawkeye is the underrated but highly effective marksman... This has been a very good year for Renner, he starred along side Tom Cruise in the successful MI4 and now this... He didn't get too many dialogues but in the final sequences his action is brilliant...
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Ramanoff / Black Widow... Too good to be true but she is... I guess every girl hates her and every guy loves her... Its great to see Scarlett perform with such ease and grace with huge names along side her... Her character continues from where she left off in Iron Man 2... That pout is back guys... Be afraid, very afraid... You might blurt out your secrets...

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury... Director of SHIELD... Classy and scary with one eye... He tries to lead the team until he realizes he cant control such a volatile group and lets them be themselves...

Tom Hiddleston as Loki... Good and convincing... He's actually quite good looking for a villain... His one on one scene in the end with the Hulk is out-of-the-world good... Watch it...

Joss Whedon, the Director... Superb job... He's relatively unknown guy... Did the famous Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV Series... He must be credited with keeping everything in the right proportion, every one getting screen space and also making sure that the actors perform well... I am hugley impressed with this guy and expect to see more of him... Stark's comic timing though was taken from Favreau's direction... I have repeadely mentioned that the movie is very funny, credit to Joss for creating that 2 in 1 feeling...

The entire star cast at one of the numerous promotional event... I must mention here that its so heartening to see all these big stars in one place at one time... I've seen many interviews and was happy to see each star praise the other and be ready to give credit... Can you imagine Aamir, Saif, SRK, Salmaan on one stage all together for an event... They won't even agree to sign a movie let go of being for an event together... Sad and I hope that changes soon... They have to learn this from Hollywood...

I’d like to thank Jedi for introducing me to Iron Man in 2010 and it was only fitting that I watched the Avengers with him...

We all have our own Super Heroes... Maybe our fathers... What we need to learn from watching Super Heros is the art of never accepting defeat and always giving it a shot... So get up and be a Super Hero in real life...

Fuzzy-O-Meter:
5/5 – Go watch it without further delay... Enjoy the small and the big things about the movie equally... You all have to ensure it grosses more than Avatar... Please for God's sake... Spread the word, go... Wake up...!!! Suit up...

  2. Hey your review was really well written. I liked your suggestion that even Bollywood can learn from their other counterparts. Multi-starrer movies like Housefull 2 are earners only in tier II cities. India is yet to get over R-One. Hollywood fame in our cities is more attributed to Sci-Fi / Action films. So I guess bollywood will take atleast 20 more years to reach similar heights.

But Avengers is a good watch. :) And as usual NICE WORK .. FUZZY!

  3. @ Ankit... Thank you for the kind words, glad you liked the review... Its sad that some of our best actors have never faced each other before the camera... Not just The Avengers, do you remember movies such as Departed? or the Expendables? Huge star cast and everyone supports the other... So that is something which we need big time... Full marks to John and Akshay for coming together and entertaining us... Sc-Fi movies in India really need to grow... Poor Ra.One was not a scratch on The Avengers, so long way to go... Make sure you do watch this one... :)...
